Director and Screenwriter

 

Director, screenwriter and teacher, he graduated in Film Directing from EICTV (Cuba) and Performing Arts from CAL (Rio de Janeiro).

His first feature film, "Malu" (2024), was the only Brazilian film selected for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, among 10 fiction films from around the world, with extremely positive reviews. At the Festival do Rio, “Malu” won the awards for Best Fiction Feature Film and Best Screenplay, as well as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

His filmography includes 8 short films screened in competition at festivals such as Venice, Locarno, Havana, Oberhausen, Turin, Huelva, Cinéma du Réel, Rio and São Paulo. The short film "O teu sorriso" (2009), starring Paulo José and Juliana Carneiro da Cunha, won several awards in Brazil and was in the Venice competition. "Antesala" (2006) premiered at the Centre Georges Pompidou and "Se por acaso" (2016) was filmed under the artistic supervision of Abbas Kiarostami and premiered at the Locarno Film Festival. "After the Party" (2019) won the best director award in Tokyo.

He directed the plays "Outros Tempos" (2011) by Harold Pinter and "Vista de Cima" (2014) by Bráulio Mantovani.

He has directed 11 fiction TV shows, including soap operas under the general direction of Luiz Fernando Carvalho and Maurício Farias, some episodes of the series "As Canalhas" (2013, GNT) and the general direction of three seasons of the sitcom "Morando Sozinho" (2010-12, Multishow). He has written four full-length TV series for various production companies.

He was assistant director to Karim Aïnouz, Lucia Murat and theater directors Enrique Diaz and Bia Lessa. He has worked as a scriptwriter for Aïnouz and Ruy Guerra; as a casting coach for Marcelo Gomes, Cao Guimarães and Eduardo Valente; and as a collaborator with Sandra Kogut and Charles Watson. He wrote the screenplay for "Aspirantes" (2015), by Ives Rosenfeld, which won the Carte Blanche award at the Locarno Film Festival and Best Screenplay at the Fronteira Film Festival.

He teaches directing at the EICTV (Cuba), Altos de Chavón (Dominican Republic) and AIC (RJ/SP) film schools. He took part in the Director's Lab residencies at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York (2012) and the Berlinale Talent Campus (2008).
